Unit 3-9 / Part 2
All the high school students who are applying for entrance into universities
take the standardized ability exam (Soo-neung). Last year, there were
some issues concerning "cheating" by the students during the exam using
instruments such as the cellular phone. The Ministry of Education has
consequently made some changes to the examination procedures this
year. For example, students going to the washroom during the exam must
now go through a metal detector and anyone who refuses this will have their
exams voided.

❌ "I took his cheat on the exam."
✅ "I cheated on the exam." / "I copied his answers on the exam."

한국어에서 '커닝하다'는 시험에서 부정행위를 한다는 뜻이지만, 영어의 'cunning'은 '교활한'이라는 형용사일 뿐 부정행위와는 관계가 없습니다. 영어로는 반드시 cheat on an exam 또는 copy someone's answers라고 표현해야 합니다. 또한 이 단원의 핵심 표현인 'take advice'처럼 동사+명사 조합이 중요한데, 'take a cheat'처럼 아무 명사나 붙이면 의미가 통하지 않으니 정확한 콜로케이션을 익혀야 합니다.

❌ "Please take an advice on how to avoid cheating."
✅ "Please take advice on how to avoid cheating."

한국어에는 관사 개념이 없어서 'advice' 앞에 'an'을 붙이는 실수를 자주 합니다. 하지만 advice는 불가산 명사이기 때문에 'an advice'라고 쓸 수 없습니다. 구체적으로 세고 싶다면 'a piece of advice'라고 표현해야 합니다. 이 단원의 표현인 'take advice on ~'을 사용할 때 특히 주의하세요.
