I wish you would help me instead of sitting there and doing nothing.
I wish ＋ 주어 ＋ would/could/should/might 는 현재 또는 미래의 실현될 수 없는 소망을 나타내는 표현으로'~하면 좋을 텐데','~이기를 바란다'의 뜻으로 사용된다. 일반적인 가정법 과거문장에서와 같이 be동사를 사용할 때, 주어의 수나 인칭에 관계없이 were를 쓴다는 사실에 유의해야 한다.

School violence is an increasing concern in South Korea. One TV
documentary interviewed parents and teachers who did not take school
violence seriously enough. However, we encounter constant reports of
incidents of injuries and even death due to the violent attacks or incidents of
suicide due to bullying. It seems that parents and teachers can no longer
deny the seriousness of school violence.

Korean Trap! / 한국인 실수 교정
Common mistakes Korean speakers make.
한국인이 자주 하는 실수를 알아봅시다.
한국어로 '~했으면 좋겠다'를 영어로 옮길 때 'I wish + will'을 쓰는 실수가 매우 흔합니다. 'I wish' 뒤에는 가정법을 사용해야 하므로 'will'이 아닌 'would'를 써야 합니다. 'I wish + 주어 + would/could'는 현재 실현되지 않는 소망을 나타내는 표현이므로, 학교 폭력 문제처럼 바뀌길 바라는 상황을 말할 때 반드시 'would'를 사용하세요.
가정법 과거에서 be동사는 주어의 인칭이나 수에 관계없이 'were'를 사용합니다. 한국어에는 이런 구분이 없기 때문에 'I was'로 쓰기 쉽지만, 'I wish' 뒤에서는 항상 'were'가 문법적으로 올바른 형태입니다. 학교 폭력 피해 상황처럼 현실과 다른 소망을 표현할 때 꼭 기억하세요.
