I used to play basketball a lot, but now I don’t play as much as before.

대조적으로 이전의 사실, 상태를 나타내어 ‘이전에는~이었다’라는 뜻으로 쓰인다.

나는 농구를 많이 하곤 했지만, 그만큼 많이 하지는 않는다.

I used to call him everyday, but now I only call him once a month.
나는 그에게 매일 전화를 하곤 했지만, 이제 한 달에 한 번 정도만 한다.

나는 몇 시간 동안 일을 하곤 했지만, 더 이상은 아니다.

The common salary man in Korea lives in fear of early retirement. While
retirement in most other countries means rest and relaxation, it is something
to be in fear of in Korea. Consequently, many people with stable jobs are
scrambling to upgrade their skills so that they can keep working for as long
as possible.
