If + S + V(과거) ~
'내가 만약 ...라면 할 텐데' 라는 뜻의 가정법 과거 문장으로 현재 사실에 반대되는 일을 가정할 때 쓴다. 가정법 과거 문장의 형태는 보통 'If + 주어 + 과거동사, 주어 + would/should/could/might + 동사원형'이다. if절에 쓰이는 be동사는 인칭이나 수에 관계없이 were가 쓰인다는 사실은 유의한다.
